Introduction
The Muslim Youth Helpline (MYH) is a registered charity which provides pioneering faith and culturally sensitive services to Muslim youth in the UK.
Our core service is a free and confidential counselling service available nationally via the telephone, email, internet and a face to face befriending service in the Greater London area. The service uses male and female volunteers trained in specialised support skills to respond to client enquiries.
MYH also runs an interactive peer support site, www.muslimyouth.net. The site was launched in October 2004 as Britain’s first guidance and support channel for Muslim youth. The site is designed and managed entirely by young people and reflects the diversity of Muslim communities in the UK. The site encourages young Muslims to develop peer-support networks, access specialist and mainstream support services and care for their social and mental wellbeing. muslimyouth.net aims to raise awareness of the different social problems that affect young Muslims and provide culturally sensitive guidance to young people.
All our volunteer staff are between the ages of 18 and 30 years. By omitting the generation gap and the cultural restrictions of an adult-run service, we are able to build the trust of young people and deal effectively with the social pressures that young people from the Muslim community have never before been able to reveal.
MYH funds its work through grants from various charitable trusts and government departments, independent fundraising and donations from individuals.
We hold Full-Voting membership of the Telephone Helplines Association who independently assess our policy documents and govern our practice. MYH was also awarded the Investors in People Standard in October 2005.
Vision & Mission
To provide faith and culturally sensitive peer support services to young Muslims in the UK.
To engage, train and develop young people in providing a platform for peer support in the community.
To challenge the barriers, stereotypes and taboos which prevent young Muslims from accessing support either in the community or mainstream services so that no young person is forced to endure their problems in silence.
Our Ethos
MYH is a youth led organisation which aims to put young people at the forefront of service delivery and at the centre of decision making at all levels of the organisation.
The cornerstone of our service is to respect the confidentiality of the client and to offer a flexible client centred service, placing primary emphasis on the needs of the young person.
We work to promote peer support and provide young people with training and skills that will stay with them throughout their lives and have an impact on the wider community and society around them. We also hope to nurture the leadership skills of young people by putting them in positions of responsibility and decision making.
The engagement of young people at all levels is invaluable to ensuring the organisation remains responsive to the needs of the young people we seek to serve. As well as ensuring the organisation is effective in service delivery, young people are able to bring fresh perspectives to the organisation, and the will to try innovative ideas.
In all our work we aim to work to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity and employ the Islamic etiquettes of tolerance and non-judgement in dealing with all issues faced by young people.
